Natif de Lyon (Rhône) en 1800, Jean-Baptiste Delestre vient à Paris encore enfant avec ses parents. Admis en 1816 à l'École des Beaux-Arts, il entre ensuite dans l'atelier du peintre Gros, et expose ses propres œuvres à partir de 1838, notamment des tableaux d'histoire. Personnage atypique, Jean-Baptiste Delestre se révèle être peintre d'histoire, sculpteur, graveur, critique d'art, écrivain d'art et homme politique.
